kamil, 24 year old aliya stan, who is here to annoy you from the only relevant polish city that is kraków. #aliya or death
The way things are in women’s gymnastics currently I don’t think it’s a disadvantage to have a muscular build. Definitely at one point gymnasts were punished if their gymnastics lacked a balletic quality - whether due to their natural build, style, or a combination of both - but being naturally suited to powerful gymnastics and lacking the lines, extension, and flexibility of a ballerina is no longer a barrier to being successful at the elite level IMO. It’s great that gymnastics have evolved to this point and broadened its definition of what it means to be an incredible gymnast, but I’m kind of sick of acting like current gymnasts had insurmountable barriers to overcome because of their athletic and muscular body types cause I just don’t think it’s true at this point.

Team russia news , Nelly Kim saing some good words about Aliya come back after baby tass(.)ru/sport/4627829 :P and about Eremina and Melnikova as well :) tass(.)ru/sport/4627770
Nelli Kim is happy that girls like Eremina and Melnikova are part of the Russian team. She says both inherited the best feature of the Soviet school, and they have good choreography and ballet training. Eremina did well so far at these Worlds, but she needs to add difficulty. She would like both girls to be more relaxed during competitions, as American girls are, since they have to connect with the audience too, but thinks they’re a bit shy, just like she was, herself, once. According to her, Eremina could be one of the stars of the Tokyo games, but the competition will be tough, especially since Simone Biles might return, and she has very difficult routines.
Regarding Aliya, she says motherhood will not hinder her ability to perform, and names Latynina and Chuso as examples. She will be able to become a leader again, and it’s great to have such athletes in training, because she’ll strengthen the team and the younger girls might improve even faster training alongside her.
my fave thing abt “RUSSIAN ARM WAVING LULZ!!!!” derisive discourse on here is that actually “””arm waving””” is….. literally…… dancing…… like its a hugely important part of body movement and can be super expressive, have none of u dumbasses seen even like a 10 second clip of the ballet swan lake???
also even if u deem certain arm choreo “useless arm waving” u still have to admit that it looks better when gymnasts with actual ballet training incorporated into their workout schedules as a major component of their gymnastics training do it than if an american gymnast whose home gym does ballet for one hour a week would do the same choreo but oh well :~)
